Depending on the age of the child, they may require up to 12 hours a night in bed, meaning that they’re spending half the day in there, so it’s important to ensure that you have a bed that’s suitable for them. In this guide we’re going to explore which ages different beds can be used from and when it’s likely that a child will outgrow such a bed.

Toddler beds, as the name suggests, are designed with toddlers in mind. They are typically smaller than other types of beds, so they’ll take up less space in your child’s bedroom. They usually come with a small guard to stop your child from falling out which can be seen in the image above.

It’s common for children to outgrow a cot and move onto a toddler bed anywhere between 18 months and 3 years old. Although if the child is towards the latter you may want to skip out a toddler bed and move directly to one of the beds featured below. The age in which a child will grow out a toddler bed will vary and the height and weight of your child should be taken into consideration over the age of your child. Most toddler beds will come with a weight restriction of around 50lbs.

Cabin Beds – 4+

Cabin beds are great for extra storage with drawers and cupboards being under the bed. Due to being raised off the floor we would recommend that they are used by children that are at least 4 years old. They can essentially be used up into adulthood however this will depend on the length bed and once your child hits their teenage years they may become less desirable to them.

A bunk bed is an ideal solution if you have 2 children sharing a room. The top bunk is even higher than that of a cabin bed so we’d suggest a minimum age of 6 for the top bunk. Like the cabin beds there’s no real maximum age, however this will be limited by the length of your bed.

Twin/Single Beds – 3+

A single bed can really be used for children from as young as 3 years old and have potential to last through to adulthood depending on the style and size of the bed.
